Privacy policy

markInk collects nothing. Your notes, your transcriptions, and your reMarkable token stay on your Mac. We operate no server that your copy of the app could send anything to.

Who is responsible

BeyondSimulations GmbH is the controller for this website in the sense of Art. 4(7) GDPR. Contact details are at the bottom of this page and in the imprint.

Your notes

markInk reads the documents in your reMarkable account and writes them to a folder you pick on your Mac. The pages are rendered and, where they contain handwriting, transcribed on your own machine. Typed text from a Type Folio keyboard is extracted directly from the file. None of this content is sent to us, and none of it passes through any service of ours.

Your reMarkable token

Pairing with your tablet produces a device token. markInk stores that token in the macOS Keychain, where it is protected by the system and available only to markInk on your Mac. It is used to authenticate against the reMarkable cloud and for nothing else. Unpairing removes it.

reMarkable cloud

To sign in with your pairing code, refresh the token, and download your documents. markInk is a read-only client: it fetches your notes and can never create, change, or delete anything in your reMarkable account. Your use of that service is governed by reMarkable AS's own terms and privacy policy.

huggingface.co

Only if you choose to install the optional higher-accuracy transcription model. markInk then downloads the model weights from Hugging Face and verifies them against a checksum. This happens once, on your request; if you stay with Apple's built-in recognition, markInk never contacts Hugging Face at all. The download requests contain no information about you or your notes.

Apple (App Store / StoreKit)

To show regional pricing, complete or restore the one-time purchase, and check your entitlement. Those requests are handled by Apple under your App Store account. markInk sends no notes, settings, or usage data through StoreKit.

No analytics, no telemetry

The app contains no analytics SDK, no crash reporter, no advertising, and no third-party tracking code. It does not phone home on launch, on sync, or on error. There is no account with BeyondSimulations, because there is nothing for an account to hold.

Settings and logs

Preferences — the mirror folder, the sync schedule, the transcription engine — are stored locally in the standard macOS user defaults. Diagnostic logs are written to a small rotating file inside the app's own container on your Mac (under Application Support/MarkInk/Logs) and stay there. They are never uploaded. You can export that file yourself from Settings → Health; if you ever send us a log to help with a problem, that is your deliberate act, by mail, and you can read it first.

Your rights

GDPR gives you the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, data portability, and objection, and the right to complain to a supervisory authority. In practice we hold no personal data about app users to which those rights could attach: everything markInk produces is already in your own file system, under your control, and you can delete it at any time. If you write to us, we keep your mail only as long as needed to answer it.

This website

This site is static. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics, and embeds nothing from third parties. Its fonts are served from this same site, so visiting it does not contact an external font provider. Our hosting provider processes the usual connection data (IP address, requested page, timestamp) in server logs for the purpose of delivering and securing the site, on the basis of Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR.
